The comparison of titanium alloy and aluminum alloy

Aluminum alloy and titanium alloy are two widely used materials between light alloys. Then, what are the difference Titanium
alloy and aluminum alloy? Titanium is a kind of common metal materials, it is lighter than steel, iron, copper and other metals,
but corrosion resistance is not lower than steel, stronger than aluminum at the same time, so it is widely used in industrial
application. Alloy made in titanium based has good corrosion resistance, high heat resistance, and is called the titanium alloy.

The density of titanium alloy is generally 60% of steel, some high strength titanium alloy has higher density than other alloy, can produce components with high strength, good rigidity and light weight. In fact aluminum alloy is lighter than titanium
alloy, which they will be used in aircraft, automotive, machinery shell, the fuselage and larger parts. So, what is the difference
between them?  Aluminum alloy and titanium alloy are different in hardness, and corrosion resistance, intensity, color etc.

• Hardness comparison: use hard iron to scratch at aluminum alloy and titanium alloy, no trace on the titanium alloy, and
aluminum alloy tend to leave sharp scratches. Which proves that the titanium alloy has higher hardness than aluminum alloy.
• Corrosion resistance comparison: drop acid or alkali liquor on the surface of aluminum alloy and titanium alloy material, will
find aluminum alloy will gradually turn black, and titanium alloy is the same. This suggests that the titanium alloy has better
acid alkaline-proof than aluminum alloy.
• Strength comparison: use pliers or a hammer to damage on the same thickness of aluminum alloy and titanium alloy,
aluminum alloy is relatively easy to deformation, while deformation of titanium alloy more arduous.
• Color comparison: aluminum alloy, gloss slightly lower, and titanium alloy, high gloss, look a bit like a raven stainless steel
color.
• Workability comparison: when using coated tools for cutting aluminum alloy, good for processing, it has good milling and
cutting processability, cutting speed can reach 200 m/min, not easy to wear cutting tools; Due to the rigidity of titanium alloy,
use the coated tools easy to aggravate tool wear when machining , so in the cutting of titanium alloy machined part, carbide to
use something of good quality, but the problem has been solved along with the development of the industry, such as using
metal powder injection molding process can form the parts at once time, needs no cutting.

Thus, although both is alloy, titanium alloy and aluminum alloy application industry are very similar, but still have very big
distinction. In addition, the corrosion resistance of titanium alloy is much better than aluminum alloy when working in seawater
and the humid atmosphere, even better than stainless steel. As a result, the titanium alloy is especially suitable for application in
submarine, underwater operation equipment.

Titanium alloys are much more expensive than aluminum alloy in terms of price, its application field is much narrower than
aluminum alloy, it was originally used in aviation, submarines and other high-end technology, but with the industrial
development of science and technology, the titanium alloy and aluminum alloy will be in the field of its own advantages, play a
more and more important role.

There are some domestic advanced MIM plant and the south university of science and technology education scientific research
units have been developed aluminum and aluminum alloy of metal injection molding process, believe in the near future, we will
be able to see more aluminum MIM products.
